Mechanical Design Engineer

An opportunity has arisen at our Letchworth (Hertfordshire) facility for an experienced mechanical design engineer, required to assist in the design and manufacture of bespoke functional test equipment.

Working as part of a specialist engineering group, you will liaise with the management and engineering teams, sales team and directly with customers (travelling within the UK to customer sites may be necessary).

You must be able to work on your own initiative and should be comfortable taking full ownership of the mechanical design aspects of each unique project.

Essential elements of the role include:

  • Reviewing customer drawings/ideas.
  • Turning your ideas and solutions into concept sketches.
  • Producing 2D & 3D drawings of the final designs using AutoCAD, SolidWorks or similar.
  • Generating manufacturing drawings, BOMS and program files for CNC milling/routing machine.
  • Some assembly of parts to ensure correct functioning of the final designs.

Knowledge and practical experience of electro-mechanical design and pneumatic design would be advantageous.

This is a permanent position based at our Letchworth Garden City facility.

  • Normal working hours of 37.5 per week (5 days, Mon-Fri) with paid overtime as/when available.

The opportunity:

We are seeking a Control Systems Design Engineer to join our growing team within Sapcote Engineering. We are a successful company with a 50-year history, offering industrial solutions for materials handling, packing, automated component assembly, inspection and bespoke automation including advanced robotics.  Our extensive experience in advanced automation and conveyance in manufacturing systems, along with our reputation for operational excellence, has made us the integrators of choice for many of the UK’s international brands.

In this role you will be expected to:

  • Manage the full cycle from PID concept to detail design and specification of control systems for our expanding project portfolio.
  • Design the electrical controls, drives, sensors and network systems for special-purpose machinery for industries such as automotive, pharmaceutical, electrical, electronic, food and packaging.
  • Produce detailed wiring design drawings for both in-house and contract manufacturing work-packages.
  • Communicate directly with new and existing customers and suppliers and work seamlessly with our technical sales, project engineering, design, sourcing, manufacturing and installation teams.

What we’re looking for:

  • Degree qualified on a relevant subject (minimum HNC level)
  • Minimum 5 years working as a Control Systems/Electrical Engineer.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing electrical control systems panels and/or switchgear controls for production systems and equipment.
  • Proven ability to interpret customer specifications, implicit and explicit system requirements and hidden needs, to develop detail design solutions for automation projects.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent ability to work with minimal supervision and as a subject matter expert in multifunctional teams.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel as and when required.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent numerical and verbal reasoning skills.
  • Proven ability to follow and apply best-practice in professional project management across both agile and waterfall methodologies.
  • Advanced CAD drawing software experience
  • IT systems and networking literacy
  • Basic programming skills in a popular software language (C/Python/Javascript)

  • Work as part of a small design team designing and detailing industrial access platforms, conveyor systems, and automation engineering solutions using 3D Inventor.
  • The work is varied as most of our systems are bespoke engineering solutions and will involve:
    • Site surveys involving measuring, sizing and scanning customer sites and installations.
    • Liaising with new and existing clients to understand their needs and present to them
    • Interpreting customer URS and designing solution systems at the concept level
    • Working with and supporting the technical sales managers and project engineers of our group.
    • Calculating the right size of components based on sound engineering principles, tolerances and “design for manufacture” and “design for assembly” best-practice.
    • Detailing and issuing technical drawing packages to facilitate in-house fabrication and assembly and external subcontractors’ manufacturing.
    • Creating parts lists and working closely with the procurement team to ensure accurate and timely availability of components.

What we’re looking for:

  • CAD Design Engineer
  • Degree qualified (HNC+) preferred
  • A minimum, of 5 years’ experience working as a Mechanical Design Engineer
